There are many positives to this NAS which you can read in other reviews, they are accurate. For me, however, these positives are negated by the difficulty in configuring security. The NAS tends to follow a philosophy of having default security settings to being wide open and the Admin will need to tighten security. This is not done in one simple location and it takes long sessions reviewing the manual to figure out how to secure this NAS, if it is even capable of being secured the way you want it to be.

For example, in Photo Station 5 it is not possible (or at least VERY obscure and kludgy) to prohibit everyone on the internet from seeing your albums/photos while defaulting all user uploaded albums/photos to be viewable by all logged in user accounts that you've created. There are also social networking features for Facebook, Twitter and Plurk that cannot be disabled. Because of the security settings I consider the photo portion of this device to be unusable. It is that unusual to want all my personal photos to be accessible by my entire family while not being accessible in a web search from a Thailand brothel? Without having to have albums only created by Admin who needs to manually set security that way on every album? As I said, unuseable.

I am also having similar difficulties with the file system where I do not want users to access other user's files. This I do expect to resolve eventually after I scour the manual. Security is just not a simple turn-key solution.



Synology DS211 Review by John Smith (Virginia)

Background: I have previously used D-Link DNS-323 NAS Enclosure. I have been mostly happy with it. My DNS-323 has been working great for the last 3+ years but I needed more storage capacity so decided to get a new enclosure.

I first heard of the name "Synology" when I was researching for a new NAS enclosure. I'd never come across this company name before so I was a bit unsure. I rely on product reviews here on Amazon when making such decisions so I bought this after reading the raving reviews here.

When I was ready to buy, I was confused about the differences between the three similar 2-disk models: DS211J vs. DS211 vs. DS211+. To help others make this decision, I'll try to compare the three models so that you (as the reader of this review) will not have to spend several minutes (like I did) trying to figure out what makes DS211 different from DS211J and DS211+ models.

Just to be clear, all three models use the same operating system (software) so you get the exact same capabilities from the three models. So it all comes down to hardware and more specifically, CPU and memory.

Let me compare the hardware differences between these three models:

CPU:
DS211+ : 1.6 GHz
DS211 : 1.6 GHz (same as DS11+)
DS211J : 1.2 GHz

MEMORY:
DS211+ : DDR3 512MB
DS211 : DDR3 256MB
DS211J : DDR2 128MB

So there you have it. DS211+ has the largest memory as well as the faster CPU. Though DS211 has the same CPU as DS211+, it has half the memory than DS211+. DS211J is at the lowest end out of the three.

These systems are like mini computers that have their own processors, memory and run their own Linux-based operating system called "Synology DiskStation Mananger" (or DSM for short) - currently at version 3.1. As I mentioned, all three models can run the same DSM software.

Because I wanted a NAS enclosure to keep for years (just swapping out hard drives when needed), I wanted the fastest enclosure I could afford. That's why I picked DS211 because it has a faster CPU. Faster CPU means you can get more things done, i.e. playing media using its media server capabilities while also downloading/uploading files and doing other tasks with file on the server. More memory can be helpful if you have a large collection of huge video/image files that need to served up via the media server. For my needs, 256MB was more than enough.

As I mentioned that this device is not just a disk enclosure but also a little computer, it can serve as a stand-alone DLNA server. This is also one of the features I was looking for so I could stream videos directly from this device to my network-connected LED TV. Now if you look at DS211J features/spec, you'll notice that, that is the only model that shows "DLNA certified" in its features. DS211+ and DS211 do not show DLNA as one of their features (here on Amazon). So you'd think that only DS211J can serve as a DLNA server? Well, that is not quite true. Because all three run the same OS, they can all be great DLNA servers. In fact if you go to the manufacturer's website and look at the product page for these, you will notice that all three have the same media server capabilities.

Out of all the features, what really impressed me the most is the operating system that runs it. When I first connected to it (via the web browser), I was totally surprised because it runs like a complete OS from within a browser window. You can manager everything from there, including all of your shares. You have to see it to believe it! To test drive the OS, there is a Synology DSM Live Demo on the manufacturer website (I cannot include link here because Amazon will strip it).

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a full-featured consumer NAS solution.

And after you have bought it, make sure to keep checking for the updated version of DSM and updating it whenever a new version is available to download. In fact, right after you install it, this is the first thing you should do. The updates are very easy and they often fix bugs as well as add more features and functionality.

I forgot to mention that there is not one but several mobile apps available for these devices on both Android and iOS platforms.

On the Android Market, as I write this, you can find these official apps developed by Synology:
DS audio, DS file, DS photo+, DS finder, DS cam, and Synodroid.

My favorite is the Synodroid app that lets me search, download and manage torrents remotely from my Android phone.

On the Apple App Store, you can find all of the above apps except for Synodroid (for obvious reasons because of the suffix "-droid" in the app name). But I could not find any other app available on the iOS platform that provides the same functionality that Synodroid does on the Android platform.

DSM 3.2 was just released. You should definitely update if you are running OS X Lion.

The best thing about Synology is that they keep adding new features and updating the software - at no cost to you. I love it when a company does that. I found out that they have yet another mobile app called DS Mobile that let you manage the device from a tablet (iPad or Android).

Also, you can use this device to backup to the Amazon S3. They have a great wiki article about how to configure it to automatically backup to your S3 bucket. I cannot provide a link here but if you Google for "Synology S3" you should be able to find the Wiki article.


Synology DS211 Review by MIS McGee (San Marcos, TX)

I purchased this guy in February, and it been running solid with 2 x 2TB Hitachi drives running in a Raid 1 mirror config. I purchased this for use on a home network.

Pros:
+ Great integrated bittorrent client
+ Fast as Hell
+ Reliability: It just works...and i mean all the time.
+ iphone/Android DS Audio Music Apps. With FLAC support, and 2TB, I keep all my music on the nas. When at home I use airplay via ipad to play all music on appleTV/Receiver (You could use a sling box as well). Just completely seamless, phenomenal in my book.
+ Great DLNA Media Server. Once I convert an mkv to M2TS for playback on the PS3, everything is COMPLETELY flawless.
+ Great Free 3rd party app for download management called syndroid for android phones.
+ All the functionality of 'free' apple/google/amazon cloud services while maintaining ownership of your own data!
+ Frequent features added all the time (3.2 will move to an HTML5 interface!)

Cons:
+ I have rebooted twice in the past 6 months (...not really a con)
+ Android DS Audio app needs https login (iphone app has had this already for a while).


I know theres a lot of functionality im not using in this thing, but really, as a multimedia user who wants data storage, there is no way in hell id consider anything else. I chose the 211 over the 211j because i figured the extra $100 would justify the extra memory and processor benefit. Never played with the 211j, but im glad i have the 211 (reduce zip extract times, photo indexing, indexing in general, etc....im sure the 211j would be fine...but for $100...seemed worth it to me).

A coworker of mine bought a Netgear NAS around the same time for ~100 less, but honestly he cant do half of what i do natively on this thing with his box. You're paying for the great software, community and support. For me it was 100% worth it.
